Getting It Right

Getting it Right Literacy is an initiative of the Department of Education and Training. It seeks to improve the Literacy standards of students at risk in the junior years of primary school.

Currently at Rockingham Lakes Primary School GIR-L is operating in four junior primary classes. The classroom teacher and the GIR-L teacher work collaboratively to plan and conduct lessons and programs targeted to the needs of students at risk in these classrooms. Last year we focused on students abilities in writing. Programs include modelled lessons, hanks on activities, explicit teaching, Literacy Centres. Independent and collaborative work

We are also working towards implementing guided reading as an integral part of the programs in these classrooms.

Students at risk are identified using Literacy Net, WALNA testing and teacher judgement. Lessons are then planned and carried out with the needs of these students as the focus. Students are given many opportunities to practise these skills. This is a fairly new program at Rockingham Lakes Primary School but with the help of the Breakthrough Reading Program we are starting to see the difference in our students.
