BE PROUD

Rockingham Lakes Primary School was established in 2002 and has students who are drawn from a range of socio-economic backgrounds. Many students are from naval families and have a high degree of transience. A tool was needed to unite the school and to provide the appropriate support to each individual child.

As outlined in the Curriculum Framework it was essential to provide students with the necessary life skills to make informed choices.

When teachers looked they found many disparate, isolated programs available for self esteem and behavioural management. The staff workshopped a way to draw these programs together to provide an integrated, holistic approach to pastoral care in its broadest sense.

The Rockingham Lakes Primary School 'Be Proud' LogoAs a result of the planning day in 2002 staff developed the program ‘BE PROUD’ as an action learning project to address identified concerns of staff. The ‘BE PROUD’ logo symbolises a recognisable visual cue to the whole school community. It is one which every child can identify with and use to demonstrate that they are proud of themselves. The logo represents:

  • Belonging
  • Endeavour
  • Pastoral care
  • Resiliency
  • Ownership
  • Understanding
  • Developing self esteem

Mrs Lorelle Watson, the program coordinator, said that these were the major areas of need at Rockingham Lakes Primary School.

The school has enlisted expertise of professionals to inform teachers and students about some core programs. Teachers use collaborative strategies such as those in “Friendly Kids, Friendly Classrooms” and Barrie Bennett’s Cooperative Learning Strategies program. Students in Year 6 and 7 are becoming empowered through the Peer Mediation program.

The Rockingham Lakes Primary School 'Be Proud' bannerA banner has been produced by Mrs Sue Elson, a teacher at Rockingham Lakes, to be displayed at all school events. Certificates bearing the ‘BE PROUD’ logo are presented at all assemblies and stickers are awarded for students identified as demonstrating ‘Be Proud’ qualities .Teachers’ will use an eclectic approach to pedagogy which supports the principles of the Curriculum Framework and the Rockingham Lakes Primary School SCOPE Program (Student Centred Outcomes Planned Education).

Whole school special event programs like the ‘Friends Have Fun Day’ are timetabled each term to highlight different aspects of the project. Classes from our co-located school, Peel Language Development School, join with the mainstream classes to enjoy an integrated program on these days. The focus of these days will be collaboration and co-operation within the whole school community.

The skills children gain through the eclectic ‘BE PROUD Program’ will provide them with a ‘toolbox’ of strategies to assist them with life skills throughout their lives.
