Merit Selection of Staff
Rockingham Lakes Primary School has merit selection of staff. This
is different to many schools in Western Australia where a centralised
approach sees teachers, and other staff employed by the Department of
Education and Training.
Teachers apply for advertised positions at Rockingham Lakes. They
write applications addressing set selection criteria in the context
of the school and the position description. Applications are ranked
by a panel comprising school administration and staff. The panel must
always have gender equity and a job content expert. Sometimes expertise
is sought from outside the school. Further follow-up allows for referee
checks and detailed interviews. Candidates are provided with feedback
to assist them in future job applications.
The process has enabled the school to select outstanding staff members
who are closely matched to the school’s ethos and purpose.
Staff who are appointed to our school become permanent officers after
3 years satisfactory service if they are not already permanent.
The selection process involves considerable time and expense but is
strongly supported as a key factor in assuring quality staff well matched
to the needs of the school.
